New Rules For This Year’s Edition

The 16th edition of the Indian Premier League is going to be special for many reasons. Impact Player Rule and DRS to Review Wides and No-Balls are two of them.

Impact Player Rule

It allows teams to introduce an impact player on the ground. In other words, all teams can now replace a player that is underperforming or not-performing well during the match with an impact player. An impact player can be introduced anytime during the match.

He can be only an Indian. He can bowl, field, and bat like a regular player. But teams can make a foreign player their impact player only if they field less than 4 foreign players in their playing XI. DRS For Wides And No-Balls

This is another specialty of this year’s IPL. All teams can now use their DRS to get a wide ball or a No-ball reviewed. It will be a huge relief for the teams during crunch situations in the match.

No extra DRS will be given to teams to avail of this rule. All teams will have access to only three DRS as always.

BCCI Introduces New Format

The Board of Control For Cricket in India has introduced a new format for this year’s edition. Home Games and Away Game format is back now. All teams will play one home and one away game. All 52 games during the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League were played at 12 different venues.

The Impact Player Rule in IPL 2023 allows teams to replace a player from their playing XI with an Indian substitute player during the match. But both captains will have to submit the list of their 4 substitute players’ names to the match referee during the toss time. Only an Indian player can be the Impact Player. He can bat, field, and bowl like a regular player during a match. He can even bowl his full quota of 4 overs. But an impact player cannot bowl if a regular player is called off the ground in the middle of an over. In this case, teams and he will have to wait for the over to end. A foreign player can be an impact player only if a team fields less than 4 foreign players in their regular playing XI.

DRS for wides and no-balls in IPL 2023 is a new rule. The purpose is to reduce the number of errors by on-field umpires. This rule allows captains to ask the third umpire to review a wide ball or no-ball given or not given by the umpire. Teams will get an extra number of DRS because of this. Instead, teams can now use their DRS even to get wides or no-balls given or not given by the on-field umpire.

The format of IPL 2023 is a Home Game And An Away Game format. This format is returning to the IPL after a 4-year gap because of COVID-19 Pandemic. According to this format, all teams will play one home game and one away game against each other. For example, Punjab Kings (PBKS) will first play their home game at PCA (IS Bindra) Stadium, Mohali, Punjab on 1st April against Kolkata night Riders (KKR). Punjab Kings will then play an away game against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, West Bengal on 8th May 2023.
